Nintendo has rolled out a major backward-compatibility upgrade for the Switch 2, improving compatibility with original Switch games in handheld mode. Through a new “Handheld Mode Boost” setting, the console runs several Switch 1 titles using their TV or docked profiles directly on the Switch 2’s 1080p screen.
The update addresses complaints that older games appeared blurrier on the new handheld, even though they often performed better.
Once users install system version 22.0.0, they can find the Handheld Mode Boost toggle in System Settings. Activating it allows Switch 1 games that support higher resolutions in docked mode to reach up to 1080p when played on the go. Early tests show that Xenoblade and other games offer visibly sharper images when this option is active.
But there are a few trade-offs. Nintendo says that Handheld Mode Boost disables touchscreen support and treats attached controllers more like a single Pro Controller, which can lead to misleading button prompts in some games. Users should also know that using a higher docked-profile load can shorten battery life compared to standard handheld use. Performance usually matches whatever Switch 1 users saw when the console was docked.
